There's an old French book called La Guerre des boutons (War of Buttons). It's about school-aged kids from THIS village fighting with kids from THAT village. When one side captures an enemy, they rip off his buttons etc. and send him home, so he gets a beating from his parents, so buttons become the most important thing. But my point is elsewhere: there's a scene where the good guys just sit and talk and one of them explains why the two villages hate each other. Somewhere in the distant past, one village made a pilgrimage to their local shrine/cross/whatever. The whole village was walking and praying for sunshine, so their hay would dry. Along the way, they met the other village, on their own pilgrimage, praying to the same magical dude in the sky for rain, so their vegetables would grow. Fisticuffs ensued. Everybody was (kung-fu) fighting. Including the priests. Religion: it really is that fucking stupid.
